At the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa in Paris, a rare and deeply resonant conversation unfolds between two of the most influential figures in haute couture history. Azzedine Alaïa and Christian Dior: Two Masters of Haute Couture, curated by Olivier Saillard, brings together nearly seventy designs that trace a lineage of admiration, craftsmanship, and shared ideals—bridging decades through form, structure, and vision.

The exhibition runs from December 15, 2025 to May 24, 2026, inviting visitors into a world where fashion transcends time and becomes architecture, memory, and devotion.

A Formative Encounter

In 1956, Paris was no longer a distant dream for the young Azzedine Alaïa. Leaving Tunis with little more than a letter of recommendation, he arrived in the French capital and stepped—briefly but fatefully—into the universe of Christian Dior. Guided by Habiba Menchari, a pioneering figure of women’s emancipation in Tunisia, Alaïa found himself at the doorstep of Madame Lévy-Despas, a Dior client who secured him an internship within the legendary couture house.

Though Alaïa’s stay at Dior’s atelier lasted only a few days, the impression was indelible. Dior’s creations—architectural silhouettes supported by levitating petticoats—ignited a lifelong fascination. These early encounters shaped Alaïa’s understanding of structure, proportion, and the power of the cut, elements that would later define his own mastery.

Shared Codes, Enduring Ideals

Throughout his career, Alaïa’s work carried the silent echo of Dior’s influence. Accentuated waists, sculpted shoulders, curved hips, and voluminous skirts became shared signatures—expressions of femininity both powerful and precise. Both couturiers demonstrated a profound reverence for refined fabrics and nuanced color palettes, notably their fearless and poetic use of black and grey, transforming garments into timeless statements.

Alaïa, a devoted student of fashion history, never ceased to honor his predecessors. His passion extended beyond creation into preservation: over the course of his life, he amassed more than 500 Christian Dior designs, safeguarding them as cultural treasures. These pieces now form part of the Foundation’s extraordinary archives.

Fashion Beyond Time

The exhibition unfolds as a subtle dialogue between Dior’s designs from the 1950s and Alaïa’s own creations, all drawn from the collections he meticulously assembled. Despite the years that separate them, the garments reveal striking continuities—formal harmonies, shared ornamentation, and a mutual pursuit of beauty shaped by discipline and imagination.

Here, fashion becomes a reconciliation of time: a testament to how two visionaries, separated by generations, were united by an unwavering commitment to excellence and an intuitive understanding of the female form.

The Fondation Azzedine Alaïa

Located at 18 rue de la Verrerie, Paris, the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa occupies the very place where the couturier lived and worked. Founded in 2007 and recognized as a public utility in 2020, the Foundation preserves Alaïa’s legacy while celebrating the broader history of fashion, art, photography, and design.

Beyond its exhibitions, the Foundation serves as a cultural hub, housing a bookshop and café dedicated to fashion and creative heritage, and supporting emerging talents through awards and educational initiatives. Its signature logo, designed by Julian Schnabel, reflects the interdisciplinary spirit that defined Alaïa’s life.

Azzedine Alaïa and Christian Dior: Two Masters of Haute Couture is more than an exhibition—it is a meditation on lineage, influence, and the enduring power of craftsmanship when guided by passion and respect for the art of fashion.
