Experience the vibrant tapestry of global artistry at The Venice Biennale 2024 60th International Art Exhibition, where the theme "Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere" sets the stage for a captivating exploration of cultural exchange and identity. Curated by Adriano Pedrosa, this landmark event promises a feast for the senses, with artworks celebrating diversity and pushing the boundaries of contemporary expression.
Since 2021, La Biennale di Venezia launched a plan to reconsider all of its activities in light of recognized and consolidated principles of environmental sustainability. For the year 2024, the goal is to extend the achievement of “carbon neutrality” certification, which was obtained in 2023 for La Biennale’s scheduled activities: the 80th Venice International Film Festival, the Theatre, Music and Dance Festivals and, in particular, the 18th International Architecture Exhibition which was the first major Exhibition in this discipline to test in the field a tangible process for achieving carbon neutrality – while furthermore itself reflecting upon the themes of decolonisation and decarbonisation.
Embracing Cultural Exchange
At the heart of the Biennale Arte 2024 lies a celebration of cultural exchange, with artists from diverse backgrounds converging to share their unique perspectives. From the Nucleo Contemporaneo spotlighting queer and indigenous voices to the Nucleo Storico revisiting modernist movements in the Global South, every corner of the exhibition embodies the spirit of interconnectedness in a globalized world.
Spotlight on Marginalized Voices
This year's Biennale shines a spotlight on marginalized voices, amplifying narratives often overlooked in mainstream discourse. Indigenous artists from Brazil and Aotearoa/New Zealand reclaim their space, while the Disobedience Archive highlights the intersection of art and activism, giving voice to those challenging societal norms.
Journey Through Time and Space
Step into the Nucleo Storico and embark on a journey through time and space, as evocative portraits and abstract expressions captivate the imagination. Explore the Italian artistic diaspora of the 20th century, tracing the transformative impact of migration and cultural hybridity on the global art scene.
Collaborative Endeavors and Emerging Talents
Beyond the curated exhibitions, the Venice Biennale fosters collaboration and nurtures emerging talents. National Participations from 88 countries offer a kaleidoscope of perspectives, while Collateral Events provide immersive experiences for visitors. The Biennale College Arte supports young artists, empowering them to shape the future of art.
More than just an art exhibition, the Venice Biennale serves as a platform for dialogue and reflection on pressing global issues. Through contemporary art, visitors are encouraged to question norms, challenge preconceptions, and envision a more inclusive world. President Roberto Cicutto aptly describes the Biennale as a "unique meeting ground" where diverse voices converge to shape our shared narrative.
Venice Biennale will be publicly open from April 20 to November 24, 2024, the Giardini and the Arsenale will come alive with a vibrant celebration of diversity and creativity. The pre-opening festivities from April 17 to 19 will set the stage for an unforgettable experience, culminating in the awards ceremony and inauguration on April 20, 2024.
