Events & Exhibitions

October 09, 2024

The Monaco Yacht Show has always been synonymous with luxury, but this year, sustainability took center stage as the industry begins to adapt to new environmental challenges. At the 2024 edition, yachting's premier event embraced a more responsible future, reflecting the shifting demands of clients, stakeholders, and the world at large.

From the moment the show opened on Wednesday, September 25th, it was clear that the conversation around sustainability was no longer a whisper—it was a defining theme. Organizers set the tone with exclusive events focused on environmental initiatives, starting with the Monaco Yacht Show Opening Conference. Gaëlle Tallarida, Managing Director of the show, alongside superyacht expert and journalist Justin Ratcliffe, hosted an engaging program featuring industry leaders who are driving change.

The conference highlighted the need to reduce the carbon footprint of older yachts, as discussed by Jean-Marc Bolinger, CEO of MB92 Group. Robert van Tol, Executive Director of the Water Revolution Foundation, emphasized the importance of eco-responsible practices onboard, while Giedo Loeff from Feadship showcased how innovations in superyachts can influence other industries. These discussions centered on the best practices necessary to ensure a sustainable future for yachting—a future where luxury doesn't come at the expense of the planet.

The 2024 Honours Awards, organized by The Superyacht Life Foundation and the Monaco Yacht Show, were another highlight of this year’s event. The awards recognized individuals and initiatives driving positive change in the industry. Among the honorees were Mike Horn and Nick Entwisle, who received the prestigious Bowsprit Award for their efforts with Project X and Yachting Gives Back, respectively. Their work not only inspires the yachting community but also sends a message that sustainability and luxury can go hand in hand.

The Yacht Club de Monaco, a cornerstone of the principality’s yachting culture, also played a prominent role during the event. The Club hosted its highly anticipated Owners Lunch on the opening day of the show. Sixty owners of YCM-flagged yachts gathered for a private and exclusive lunch, a symbol of the Club’s influence in the world of international yachting. The total length of yachts docked at the marina this year reached an impressive 2,616 meters, further cementing Monaco's status as a global hub for luxury yachts.

Yet, while opulence and grandeur are expected at the Monaco Yacht Show, this year’s focus on sustainability added a fresh dimension to the experience. Visitors had the chance to explore a fleet of 120 extraordinary vessels, many featuring eco-conscious advancements. This was not just a display of luxury but also an educational journey into the future of yachting, where innovation and sustainability blend seamlessly with sophistication. The result? An unforgettable immersion in a world where elegance and responsibility coexist.

What truly stood out at the show was the level of craftsmanship on display. The yachts, each more stunning than the last, offered a glimpse into a world where meticulous design meets cutting-edge technology. The seamless integration of comfort and sustainability across these vessels was remarkable. From hybrid propulsion systems to eco-friendly materials, the yachting industry is clearly moving towards a greener future.

This year’s show also introduced some of the most exciting advancements in eco-friendly yachting. Among the new releases was the 122-meter *Kismet* by Lürssen, which boasts hybrid technology and can be chartered for an astonishing €3 million a week. Rossinavi, known for their innovative designs, unveiled the *Seawolf X*, a hybrid-electric catamaran, while Nautor Swan introduced *DreamCatcher*, their first hybrid sailing maxi yacht. Sanlorenzo's *Almax*, a 50-meter vessel equipped with hydrogen fuel cells from Siemens Energy, was another highlight. Siemens also sponsored the show’s Sustainability Hub, a platform for showcasing cutting-edge eco-solutions and fostering new ideas to promote a greener superyacht industry.

The Monaco Yacht Show is not just about the yachts; it’s a lifestyle event that attracts the crème de la crème of the yachting world. Celebrities, industry leaders, and international influencers gathered to celebrate the best in yachting. The Omniyat party at the Yacht Club de Monaco was one such event where guests were treated to a performance by British singer Craig David. As the rain cleared, the festivities continued under a sky filled with the sounds of music and the endless flow of Möet & Chandon.

Ultimately, the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show was a testament to the yachting industry’s ability to evolve. With sustainability at the forefront, this year's event demonstrated that luxury and environmental responsibility are not mutually exclusive. The show offered a glimpse into a future where yachts are not only symbols of prestige and elegance but also champions of sustainability.

For Porterium Magazine, the Monaco Yacht Show served as a reminder that true luxury is about more than just grandeur—it’s about innovation, responsibility, and creating a future where elegance and sustainability sail hand in hand.
